The day has finally arrived! The deadline for employer compliance with Canada’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015) is Saturday December 1, 2018. From that point, employers across Canada (with the exception of federally regulated workplaces) will be required to have ONLY WHMIS 2015 safety data sheets, supplier labels and workplace container labels for the hazardous products in their facilities, and comply with a host of other WHMIS 2015 requirements. Requirements for federally regulated workplaces will go into effect on June 1, 2019.

The December 1, 2018 deadline essentially marks the end of Canada’s long journey toward adoption of GHS, and its transition from the old WHMIS 1988 standard to the new WHMIS 2015 requirements. This year has, in fact, been the biggest year for hazard communication in Canada in nearly three decades, with WHMIS 2015 requirements for hazardous product manufacturers and importers coming into force back on June 1, and those for hazardous product distributors on September 1.

With the exception of federally regulated workplaces, businesses throughout Canada are expected to now be in full compliance with WHMIS 2015.
