Hazard Studies

What is a Hazard Study?

Hazard studies support the flexible definition of almost any structured EHS hazard identification and analysis process. In general, you complete a hazard study by identifying basic hazards of the materials and the operations, collecting information (if any) on previous hazardous experiences with the processes, and determining what further information and controls are needed to address safety, health, and environmental issues. Almost any type of hazard study can be defined, including hazard identification (HAZID), hazard and operability study (HAZOP), failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), and job safety analyses (JSAs).

Why Do We Conduct Hazard Studies?

Conducting hazard studies can help us document compliance with international EHS standards and regulations that require identification and control of risks, such as requirements for Major Hazard Facilities under Work Health and Safety Regulations in Australia, or the Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard in the US. But more generally, hazard studies build the foundation of our safety culture by helping us to systematically identify hazards before they can result in an injury, environmental release or other unplanned events that might put our business, our reputation, and our community at risk.

Benefits of hazard studies include:

  • Early identification and correction of hazards
  • More systematic visibility and control of risk
  • Better protection for workers
  • Compliance with legal requirements
  • Increased productivity, less downtime
  • Improved employee morale
