What is Injury & Illness Reporting?

Injury and Illness reporting is the reporting of workplace incidents that result in harm to an employee. It is often called incident reporting, though that is a broad term that can also include a range of incidents like vehicle accidents and chemical spills. In the United States, many employers are required to report injuries and illnesses using a form called the OSHA 300 Log.

Why Report Injuries and Illnesses?

Reporting injuries and illnesses is a critical step in identifying and fixing workplace hazards. However, the real goal should be preventing harm to employees in the first place, which is why it is an industry best practice is to report on all incidents — even those that don’t result in injuries and illnesses (e.g., near misses or near hits).
