Safety as Strategy—Innovative Approaches to Workplace Health, Safety and Performance
Education Session
Start Time: 1:00 p.m.
Presenters: Marcus Fitzgerald, Global Director, QEHS & Training, CETCO Energy Services and Marc Juaire, CPSA, MBA Principal Solutions Executive, VelocityEHS
Description: EHS professionals face critical challenges: creating programs that protect workers and driving operational excellence while ensuring compliance across diverse, high-risk environments. These challenges are magnified for global companies like Minerals Technologies Inc. (MTI), with 4,000+ employees in 30+ countries. In this session, Marcus Fitzgerald, Global Director of QEHS & Training at CETCO Energy Services (an MTI division), shares a roadmap for building a world-class safety culture that redefines traditional risk management.
Leveraging advanced tools, technologies, and continuous improvement systems, CETCO’s safety approach seamlessly supports global operations. With 15+ years of experience, Marcus reveals strategies to reduce incidents, maintain compliance, and foster a holistic, proactive safety culture. Key takeaways include utilizing EHS technologies, boosting employee engagement, and transforming safety from a compliance task to a core business driver delivering lasting results.
Key learning objectives:
- Developing a proactive safety culture that thrives in diverse industrial environments.
- Implementing cutting-edge EHS technologies that bridge multiple operational concepts.
- Creating safety systems that meet regulatory requirements across global markets.
- Transforming safety from a compliance function into a core business value that enhances international operations.

Six Common Reasons Why Workplace Ergonomics Deployments Fail
Learning Lab
Start Time: 10:00 a.m.
Presenters: Blake McGowan, CPE, Solution Executive, VelocityEHS
Description: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remain one of the most common and costly workplace injuries, primarily caused by overexertion and awkward postures. VelocityEHS helps organizations—from global enterprises to mid-market companies—prevent these injuries through a formalized, standardized ergonomics approach. Backed by benchmarking and sustainability data, this method has proven to reduce MSDs and related costs by 17% annually.
However, even well-intentioned ergonomics programs can fall short without the right foundation. VelocityEHS has identified six common reasons programs fail: lack of a standardized system, poor risk visibility, inability to measure control effectiveness, use of outdated assessment tools, reliance on ineffective controls, and misalignment with broader business priorities. This session will help participants understand these pitfalls and provide a framework for how to build a sustainable process that delivers measurable results.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Identify the six common reasons workplace ergonomics programs fail.
- Understand why they fail.
- Apply strategies to avoid failures.
- Develop and deploy a formalized process that delivers meaningful business outcomes.
- Recognize what effective ergonomics management looks like.
Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Robust Incident and Near Miss Investigations Enhancing Job Safety Analyses
Education Session
Start Time: 1:00 p.m.
Presenters: Marc Juaire, CPSA, MBA Principal Solutions Executive, VelocityEHS and Rick Barker, CPE, CSP, Senior Director, Solution Strategy, VelocityEHS
Description: Safety management systems have helped reduce non-serious injuries, but Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) incidents are declining more slowly. Identifying potential SIFs (pSIFs) is crucial for recognizing hazards and implementing controls. Discover how Artificial Intelligence (AI) effectively analyzes incident data to identify pSIFs and provides insights into hazards, root causes, and preventive measures.
In addition, while addressing pSIFs is an important step in reducing SIFs, this reactive approach relies on incident reporting. Learn how Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) offer a more proactive method to assess risks, document controls, and identify additional needs. However, JSAs can be time-consuming, require strong hazard recognition skills, and are often subjective. Uncover how AI further enhances the JSA process by identifying overlooked hazards and recommending effective controls, helping organizations better manage and mitigate SIF risks.
Key Learning Objectives:
- How AI can highlight subtle patterns and connections within incident reports that might otherwise be missed, thus improving the accuracy of pSIF identification.
- Identify three ways that AI can enhance the process of incident and near-miss investigation.
- Explain three benefits of using AI in the JSA process.
