ISO 14001: Using the Standard to Improve Environmental Management

EHS professionals are realizing that environmental management is about more than just maintaining regulatory compliance and avoiding the unpleasantries of failure, like fines and reputational risks. Increasingly, industry leaders are finding the benefits of a robust environmental management system focused on achieving positives like resource conservation and cost savings— rather than just avoiding negatives — and are turning to ISO 14001 to guide their journey.

In 1996, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the first edition of 14001. Ever since, the standard has provided a useful framework to help EHS professionals and business leaders improve their environmental management practices. Along the way, many business leaders have also found that 14001 helps them establish the kind of organized, sustainable environmental practices that support the transition from an environmental compliance focus to an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) focus. Notably, the most recent version of 14001 (2015 edition) reflects the growing industry consensus about the importance of acknowledging “societal expectations for sustainable development, accountability, and transparency,” which is central to achieving and maintaining ESG maturity.
